September 2019 News Letter
In the past month we have received positive and not-so-positive news.
County Board representative, Kathi Toelke, and Library Board representatives, Linda Calderon and Jennifer Lovejoy were guests at the Connectivity Summit in Nashville this past month. Two of our Resource Center funders are leaders in this initiative focusing on rural health. The Craig County Resource Center was identified as an example of how local communities can better serve the needs of their citizens. Specific funds will bring a senior exercise program, Silver Sneakers, promoting health and social engagement. Funds are also allocated to support the many potentials of a community kitchen.
In the August newsletter was noted that we received a notification of a $250,000 grant from the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC).
The competition for public funds are great and we were disappointed to get the news that the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program will not be funding our project this year.
At the advice of the ARC and CDBG manager, the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD), we’re building a more cohesive plan to bring and to secure a highly impactful CCRC to Craig County. DHCD is motivated to help us succeed. They believe the Resource Center is a strong project and are working with us for next year’s reapplication for the ARC and CDBG grants. In the next month we will evaluate how to create a stronger vision for support from DHCD and our other funders.
